In The Beginning
"Many of the early cell phones were considered to be "car phones", as they were too large and cumbersome to carry around in a pocket or purse."(Art institutes) The first phones looked like bricks and were very heavy to carry. They had an antenna from the top of the phone. The phone had no touch screen on it. Before the DynaTAC 8000X was released there was an eighteen month construction job to build twelve antennas around the Chicagoland, so that the phone had service when it was released (Mashable). Then an incredibly expensive phone was released, DynaTAC 8000x, a pop culture symbol. Everyone from Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street, to high school heartbreaker, Zack Morris, in Saved by the Bell wanted one(Art Institutes). The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was released on March 13th, 1984. It cost $3,995 to buy the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, the first handheld cellphone,30 years ago (Mashable). DynaTAC 8000X was so big and heavy, it weighed 28 ounces, the creators even nicknamed it “The Brick”. The sales for the phone when it was released were very poor— which was understandable—you could only use the phone for half an hour before it ran out of battery(Art Institutes). It was a trendsetter, everyone started to follow it and wanted to have the new styled phone. The key to trendsetter is to make the product popular. DynaTAC models became even smaller, and mobile, and cool to have, but still had their faults. The battery life were way better which made the phone more practical. As the technology became more advanced, other cell phone manufacturers figured out to make them better and pack all the features for their customers, more portable and more affordable. |
